Beautiful Creatures. Interview with Alden Ehrenreich

Interview

Actor Alden Ehrenreich playing the Leading Male Character in the Beautiful Creatures fantasy melodrama in the following Interview answers our questions about filming the movie, shooting its memorable scenes and shares his impressions about Russia.

It is great to be a still young, but also already established actor in Hollywood, since you get so many different opportunities every day. Alden Caleb Ehrenreich is a talent discovered by Steven Spielberg himself. This only broke the way into various TV-shows, and then came the time for the movie career. In 2007, he was asked to read a passage from The Catcher in the Rye (1951), when auditioning for the role in the director Francis Ford Coppola film titled Tetro (2009).

There were several other appearances, including reuniting with Coppola again for a small role in his following Twixt (2011) thriller, but Alden tries to work in various directions simultaneously. After majoring in Theatre at the New York University, in 2009 he founded his own production company named The Collectin. Co-founder for this happened to be a young actress Zoe Worth. A lot is coming in future for Alden Ehrenreich. You will be able to see him in Stoker (2013) and Running Wild (2013) movies.

However, the closest and the biggest part for him was the new role of Ethan Wate in the film adaptation of a novel known by the same name, written by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl and published in 2009. The book started a new Young Adult universe about good and evil wizards living alongside humans. So there Alden was starring opposite Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons and even Emmy Rossum. Together with the latter one he arrived to Moscow and spent two days here promoting Beautiful Creatures. Read on to the full text of our Interview with 23-year-old Alden Ehrenreich about his role and career prospects.

Discussing Beautiful Creatures with Alden Ehrenreich

- What’s your biggest impression about Russia so far?

Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures)- It is cold. Moscow is a very beautiful city, especially, in the snow. I’ve already seen Red Square, the Moscow Kremlin, then Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It is like no other culture, I have experienced.

- You started from Francis Ford Coppola projects. What does interest you more now: the mainstream titles or smaller art house films?

- The main thing I care about is character and the story. It can be anything: a big movie, a small movie, I really don’t care as long as I feel it is all about real people, that is why I joined Beautiful Creatures in the first place. There might be other blockbuster movie I won’t get interersted in, but I did this, because I feel this part has the necessary part of a dramatic situation and character that was written in the script, I was doing.

I also appreciate the fact that this is the film people will, actually, get a chance to see, which is not really the case with most of the other titles I have done. When you work hard about something, obviously, you want to share the result. So, I appreciate that I was able to do a big commercial movie, but I got interested in it, because it has some of the best writing that I’ve seen in various scripts, be they big or small.

- Are you happy with your Ethan Wate character in Beautiful Creatures?

- The first thing I did, when getting ready for this role, was reading the script before we started shooting. However, I got cast just a week before we started shooting the film. When auditioning, I made up a slightly South American accent. I think, the image of my character is described well in the book. Ethan reads a lot, gets excited by poetry, many details were added afterwards. Like the glasses proposed by the director. Our Production Designer advised us a lot, so it is like every staff member contributed something to the character in the Beautiful Creatures film.

- What do you have in common with him?

- He is more like I was at his age. Kind of a guy that I was with a sort of recklesness, then curiousity about things and the desire for reaching something more than you were given to take more from life. It concludes the frequency at which I understand him and at which we both live.

- Let’s talk about the challenges, you have encountered during filming in Beautiful Creatures.

- Overall, my film experience was very good, not difficult, exciting. It is great to act, to wake up thinking about working the next day with a lot of people, who are so talented. Yes, it was a great experience with the Beautiful Creatures movie.
