Another adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, who worked during the XVIII and XIXth centurues, is based on the story of Hansel and Gretel (1812). Here, it was directed by the Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola – author of the zombie comedy Dead Snow (2009), which became famous in his homeland and performed well for the low-budget indie title.
Amongst all the nine producers you could note the popular Hollywood comedy duo of director, screenwriter Adam McKay and actor Will Ferrell. The screenplay for this picture by Tommy was co-written by Dante Harper. The story sets itself in an uncertain fabulous times with dark gothic atmosphere. It starts with both sad parents, the mother (Catherine Kuehnel) and the father (Thomas Scharff), sending their kids, brother Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and cute sister Gretel (Gemma Arterton), out to the woods for some unknown reason.
The children find the Gingerbread House, where a witche attracting young victims resides. However, she did not eat her new guests, but preferred to enslace them. At one point, they were still able to destroy her and escape: the characters grow up then to become popular witch hunters that are welcomed in any city of Germany wishing to be saved from being attacked by evil witches as shown in the movie Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters.
The new contract with the government of Augsburg leads both heroes to this town, where they rescue from a woman from execution accused of playing witchcraft. Her name is Mina (Pihla Viitala), and she gets charmed by Hansel. However, the local Sheriff Berringer (Peter Stormare) is not pleased to meet national heroes and expects them both to bring trouble. Close to Augsburg children continue to disappear, while the townsfolk believes that wicked witches are preparing a mysterious ritual nearest the Circle Stones.
In the process of further adventures in Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters brother and sister met their main fan named Ben (Thomas Mann), make friends with huge troll Edward (Robin Atkin Downes), learn more about their past and family, and encounter a supreme witch Muriel (Famke Janssen), planning to make her colleagues much stronger using children souls and the heart of The White Witch. Muriel often uses the services of her assistant – The Tall Witch (Zoe Bell). Not all witches are evil in this world, but we won’t disclose in advance all the most important plot intrigues.
Cinematography for this film was done by Michael Bonvillain, who shot Cloverfield (2008) and Zombieland (2009). The estimated budget did not exceed 60 mln. USD. Nice fabulous music was recorded Icelandic composer – Atli Örvarsson, author of the soundtrack to the Vantage Point (2008) thriller. The special effects were created keeping the IMAX 3D projection technology in mind, and the movie was filmed in 3D as well. Jeremy Renner’s considerable experience in working with action-packed scenes helped a lot too, since his previous titles include Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and The Avengers (2012).
Executive music producer for the comedy Horror named Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters was award-winning Hans Zimmer, who in recent years has released soundtracks for very well-known projects, such as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (2012) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
