Hot Dancing

The new Melodrama titled Step Up Revolution, Review of which we are providing here, is the fourth entry in the popular dance franchise Step Up. The film sends all its characters to Miami, where they struggle for their idea of freedom, voicing out their needs, desires and peacefully fighting for the existence of the native neighborhood.

The Step Up (2006-2012) film series show that there still is demand from the young audience for the simple melodrama stories built around dance performances. Since 2006, the budgets in the franchise don’t stop groinw, while the box office figures are rising slower. Nevertheless, the filmmakers’ decision to create Step Up 3D (2010) has paid off with the fancy three dimensions. In total, the movies earned around 424 mln. USD, what is 6,5 times more than the sum spent on making them. The competitors are lining up with more and more such motion pictures coming to play.

This year we have also seen the European version of the idea with the sequel StreetDance 2 (2012). Meanwhile, Step Up Revolution (2012) looks much stronger bearing an alternative foreign name – Step Up 4: Miami Heat. The owners of the franchise have grown much more confident to carry out some significant production changes and dropping out of the partnership deals with Touchstone Pictures and distributor Walt Disney Studios, probably wishing to consolidate all the income. Offspring Entertainment and Summit Entertainment studios have undertaken all the production, and now they won’t have to share profits or consider demands issued by already former investors of the franchise.

The film itself is a classic dance melodrama mainly for the youth public. Unlikely, its story will surprise you with anything. Though here the plot carries out an auxillary role and just connects the dances bringing in some more sense to them. The characters’ roster once again was renewed, and the scene of action moved to the hot beaches and streets of Miami, where it is cheaper and more convenient to shoot any movie of an US-origin. Leading actor playing Sean looks very similar to Logan Marshall-Green from the Prometheus (2012) thriller, though he isn’t the one. The name of the rising star is Ryan Guzman, a Texas native with experience in baseball and martial arts moving to modeling and acting career after getting some sports injuries. By the way, that is his big screen debut.

American girl Kathryn McCormick here presents a daughter of a wealthy realtor named Emily Anderson. She has already appeared in the Fame (2009) movie and Jar of Hearts (2010) music video with Christina Perri. After an opportunity to train with talented choreographers, she was dancing with Urban Poets and also took a part in the sixth season of the TV show named So You Think You Can Dance (2009). In the end there, Kathryn finished third, losing only to two male dancers. She was then spotted by a member of the jury and the well-known producer Adam Shankman, who was, probably, happy to see the girl get in this movie. Adam Shankman himself recently rolled out his musical Rock of Ages (2012) to the cinemas, and he was producing Step Up Revolution working once again with his sister Jennifer Gibgot.
