Beautiful Creatures. Interview with Emmy Rossum
Actress Emmy Rossum playing very special and memorable supporting character in the Beautiful Creatures fantasy melodrama in the following Interview answers our questions about filming the movie, shooting its scenes and shares her impressions about Russia.
It is very natural to try acting, if you are a good singer and songwriter. The power of the voice can help you to reach out for the required goals. Emmanuelle Grey Rossum prefers Emmy for her short name. Long ago she started from singing in six different languages in 20 different operas. Some people can’t do that for the whole career. However, acting also became a priority for het at certain age. Her first ever guest appearance happened in the detective TV show titled Law & Order (1990-2010), but in 1999 came a bigger part in As the World Turns (1956-2010).
Then she starred in such movies as Songcatcher (2000) and Nola (2003), though Mystic River (2003) happened to be her first major title, especially, and it was directed by Clint Eastwood. Many know her by The Day After Tomorrow (2004) role for Roland Emmerich. Yet, she considers Poseidon (2006) as not as the best ever experience in her career. She is now a regular star for the Shameless (2011-2013) TV series, and being happy with it, she doesn’t rush to any new film contribution. Her new second album Sentimental Journey (2013), probably, shows that working with the music industry is still important for her.
However, the her new part in the movies was the new role of Ridley Duchannes in the film adaptation of a novel known by the same name, written by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl and published in 2009. The book started a new Young Adult universe about good and evil wizards living alongside humans. So there Emmy was starring opposite Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson, while the helm was taken by Richard LaGravenese. Together with Alden himself she arrived to Moscow and spent two days here promoting Beautiful Creatures. Discussing Beautiful Creatures with Emmy Rossum
- What’s your biggest impression about Russia so far?
- Good soup and lots of traffic.
- How did you get involved in Beautiful Creatures?
- I got the script and also knew of Richard LaGravenese as of the Director from the times of P.S. I Love You (2007), he worked with Gerard Butler and I’ve heard really good things about him from him, since we collaborated on The Phantom of the Opera (2004) and I also so I watched how his profession came and was interested in him as a director and writer. So I read the script and really liked it. I wanted to play Ridley Duchannes, the script was sent to me for this character and I auditioned for her. That was the most fun because I got to embrace the dark the side, while earlier had to be campy and play a good girl a lot. Then it was also a challenge, but I didn’t want to do it just again.
I’m way too old to play Lena in Beautiful Creatures, and I was very intrigued by my character, especially, her part. It was very fun, colorful, not like something I done before, and also I read the first book, which was already available. After it I went to audition and then Richard got me signed on.
- Did you see Ridley as a less dramatic roles then the ones you played before?
- She isn’t like what I’ve played before, she enjoys going over the top, acting her was very entertaining, but it does not mean I can only do that, I have been in straight drama before, and now I just like to try different things.
- How would you enhance your character, if you could rewrite the Beautiful Creatures script?
- I think, she plays the very specific function in the movie, so I wouldn’t make it any bigger if I was given the chance by Richard LaGravenese, in the latter books, especially, the second one she is a much bigger character, so if there is a sequel to Beautiful Creatures in the works, we will look at that and add more of her, we will see.
- Would you enjoy such an expansion?
- Yes, yes I would! She is very important to the world, though in the first book Ridley got kind of a small part as well. The story is really about two young kids in love and things that conspire against them to hold them apart, I think, that everyone feels like that about first love, parents don’t want to watch you to date, so it is related in that way, but for me whether the character is big or small – the actor puts a lot of work into it.
You have to create the whole world for yourself, even if you aren’t long on screen, you have to imagine the whole world and the whole life of that character, in spite of how much it lasted, I wouldn’t put less efforts into it, and I like my character in Beautiful Creatures. She is similar to the one in the book, where she pulls over in and pulls right out. I think, that is fun.
